Ofer spre citire 5 carti de exceptie

Carti Okian

The Meme Machine – Susan Blackmore (aparitie 05/2000) [TED Talk]

Susan Blackmore studies memes: ideas that replicate themselves from brain to brain like a virus. She makes a bold new argument: Humanity has spawned a new kind of meme, the teme, which spreads itself via technology — and invents ways to keep itself alive.

The Lucifer Effect: Understanding How Good People Turn Evil – Philip Zimbardo (aparitie 01/2008) [TED Talk]

Psychologist Zimbardo masterminded the famous Stanford Prison Experiment, in which college students randomly assigned to be guards or inmates found themselves enacting sadistic abuse or abject submissiveness. In this penetrating investigation, he revisits—at great length and with much hand-wringing—the SPE study and applies it to historical examples of injustice and atrocity, especially the Abu Ghraib outrages by the U.S. military.

The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature – Steven Pinker (aparitie 08/2003) [TED Talk 1]

This book returns to that still-controversial territory in order to shore it up in the public sphere. Drawing on decades of research in the “sciences of human nature,” Pinker, a chaired professor of psychology at MIT, attacks the notion that an infant’s mind is a blank slate, arguing instead that human beings have an inherited universal structure shaped by the demands made upon the species for survival, albeit with plenty of room for cultural and individual variation.

The Stuff of Thought: Language as a Window into Human Nature – Steven Pinker (aparitie 08/2008) [TED Talk 2]

Experimental psychologist and cognitive scientist Pinker is fascinated by the symbiosis between language and thought. In this stimulating volume, a continuation of the discussion found in The Language Instinct (1994), he argues for the “real-world importance” of “the relation of language to our inner and outer worlds.” Anchoring his discussion of why semantics matter to 9/11 and other momentous public events, Pinker teases apart the gap between the literal meanings of words and their elaborate connotations, which leads to fresh explanations of humor, the importance of metaphors, and the significance of swearing.

How the Mind Works – Steven Pinker (aparitie 06/2009)

Why do fools fall in love? Why does a man’s annual salary, on average, increase $600 with each inch of his height? When a crack dealer guns down a rival, how is he just like Alexander Hamilton, whose face is on the ten-dollar bill? How do optical illusions function as windows on the human soul? Cheerful, cheeky, occasionally outrageous MIT psychologist Steven Pinker answers all of the above and more in his marvelously fun, awesomely informative survey of modern brain science. Pinker argues that Darwin plus canny computer programs are the key to understanding ourselves–but he also throws in apt references to Star Trek, Star Wars, The Far Side, history, literature, W. C. Fields, Mozart, Marilyn Monroe, surrealism, experimental psychology, and Moulay Ismail the Bloodthirsty and his 888 children.

I want everything!

Radu Ciocan 08.04.09 at 11:37

E, credeam ca-i concurs.

Asta e link-ul catre international store

dea 08.04.09 at 15:20

asta-i nimic, sa vezi cate virgine cu probleme am eu :) )

raluca 08.26.09 at 16:20

So… mai e valabila oferta? :D

Radu Ciocan 08.26.09 at 17:23

raluca 08.26.09 at 17:28

supeeer!
pai…te invit la un ceai? :D
m-ar interesa pinker “the stuff of thought” – pentru inceput… :D

Okian 09.04.09 at 00:25

Radu Ciocan 09.04.09 at 01:26

@Okian: bineinteles.
